Learning tools for psychiatry
When I was a medical student, psychiatry was a short 2 to 3 week posting at the National University Hospital. I was no longer in touch with psychiatry until I was 4th year medical officer in the Institute of Mental Health. It was my posting of choice when I was doing my family medicine traineeship, now renamed the residency program. Then it was an optional posting, and till today it is still an optional posting in the family medicine residency program.
Most local doctors have little exposure to mental health. But today in primary health care, we are expected to do more. The HMC clinic is just one approach to mental health. We hope that over time, most doctors would be capable of addressing the mental health needs of the community.
I have put together some training material, some from NHGP CPG & resources and from relevant websites. If you never had any exposure to a psychiatry posting, it will take a lot of effort to understand this subject. I hope the learning resources are useful and will help you.
